Where to Place Your Baby Monitor (and Where Not To)

October 07, 2026

A monitor only helps if it's in the right place. Too close, and the cable becomes a hazard. Too low, and you see the side of the mattress instead of your baby's face. Here's how to set it up properly in a few minutes.

The most important rule: cords out of reach

Power cables can wrap around a baby's neck. Keep the camera and every cable at least 1 metre (about 3 feet) away from where your baby sleeps, and well out of reach โ€” even when your baby grows, pulls up or reaches through crib bars. Never place the camera inside the crib or hang it on the crib rail.

Grow-with-baby check: every month, stand where your baby sleeps and reach out the way they could. If you can touch the camera or cable, move it further away.

Height and angle

Place the camera higher than the sleep surface, looking down at an angle. From above you can see your baby's face and body, not just the edge of the mattress. A shelf, the top of a dresser or a wall-mounted spot works well.

A flexible gooseneck mount makes this easier โ€” clamp it to a shelf, dresser or table that's out of baby's reach, then bend it to the angle you need.

Watch out for light

  • Avoid pointing the camera at a window. Bright daylight behind your baby turns the picture dark โ€” a common problem for day naps.
  • Keep it out of direct sun. Cambodian afternoon sun can overheat electronics sitting on a windowsill.
  • At night, the camera's night vision works best with a clear view and no bright lamp shining into the lens.

Where your baby naps changes during the day

Many Cambodian babies nap in more than one place โ€” the bedroom in the morning, the living room after lunch, grandma's room upstairs. Pan-tilt lets you turn the camera to follow your baby without moving it, and the rechargeable battery means you can carry it to a new room for a nap. Each time you move it, repeat the checks: cables away, higher than baby, not facing the window.

The parent screen goes where you go

Put the parent unit where you'll actually be: on the kitchen counter while you cook, beside the cash drawer in the shop, on the table while you eat. Turn the volume up enough to hear the cry alert over cooking noise or a fan.

Quick setup checklist

  • Camera and cables at least 1 metre from the sleep space and out of reach
  • Camera higher than the mattress, angled down
  • Not facing a window or in direct sun
  • Whole sleep space visible on the screen
  • Parent screen charged and volume on

Frequently asked questions

How far should a baby monitor be from the crib?

Keep the camera and all cords at least 1 metre (about 3 feet) from your baby's sleep space, and out of reach as your baby grows.

Can I attach the camera to the crib?

No. Mount it on a shelf, dresser, table or wall away from the crib so your baby can't reach the camera or its cable.

Why is my monitor picture dark during the day?

The camera is probably facing a bright window. Turn it so the window is behind or beside the camera instead.

Can I move the monitor to another room for naps?

Yes. Just repeat the setup checks each time: cables away from baby, camera higher than the sleep surface, and not facing a window.
