It's 11 p.m. in Phnom Penh, the air is still warm, and you're standing over the crib wondering: is my baby too hot? Should the fan be on? Is this blanket safe? Every Cambodian parent asks these questions โ and most of the advice online was written for cold countries. This guide is written for here.
The safe sleep basics โ the same everywhere in the world
Before we talk about heat, three rules that pediatricians recommend for every baby, in every climate:
- Back to sleep. Always place your baby on their back for naps and nighttime, until they can roll over on their own.
- A firm, flat surface. A firm mattress with a fitted sheet โ not a soft mattress, sofa, or cushion.
- A clear sleep space. No pillows, thick blankets, stuffed toys, or loose fabric in the crib. It looks bare โ that's exactly right. A bare crib is a safe crib.
Keeping baby comfortable in the heat
Here's something that surprises many parents: babies are more at risk from being too hot than too cold. Overheating is a known risk factor for unsafe sleep, so in our climate, dressing baby lightly is not neglectful โ it's careful parenting.
How warm should the room be?
Aim for a comfortably cool room โ in a tropical climate, roughly 24โ26ยฐC works well for most babies. If you don't have a thermometer, use yourself as a guide: if the room feels warm to you in light clothing, it's warm for your baby too.
Fan or air conditioner?
Both are fine โ what matters is how you use them:
- Air conditioner: set a moderate temperature, and don't point the airflow directly at the crib.
- Fan: gentle air circulation in the room is good; a strong stream blowing straight at the baby all night is not. Aim the fan to move air around the room, not at the crib.
What should baby wear?
In our heat, less is more: a single layer of light cotton โ a short-sleeved bodysuit or light pajamas โ is usually enough. Skip the blanket; if you want a covering, a thin cotton sleep sack made for warm weather is safer than any loose blanket.
How to check if baby is too hot: don't judge by hands and feet โ they often feel cool even when baby is warm. Instead, touch the back of the neck or the chest. Sweaty, damp, or flushed means too hot: remove a layer or cool the room.
Using a mosquito net safely
In Cambodia, a mosquito net isn't optional โ it protects against dengue and other mosquito-borne illnesses. Used correctly, it's one of the best things in your baby's room. The rules:
- Keep the net taut and secured โ tucked firmly or on a fitted frame, never draped loosely where fabric could fall into the crib.
- Make sure the net stays out of baby's reach from inside the crib.
- Check for gaps each night โ a net with a hole lets mosquitoes in and gives false confidence.
Share the room, keep the crib
Pediatricians recommend that babies sleep in the parents' room, but on their own sleep surface โ a crib or bassinet next to your bed โ for at least the first six months. You get the closeness and quick response of having baby near, with the safety of a clear, separate sleep space.
Build a simple bedtime rhythm
Babies can't read clocks, but they learn patterns quickly. A short, consistent routine โ a warm (not hot) bath, a feed, dim lights, a soft lullaby, then into the crib drowsy but awake โ signals that night has arrived. The same steps, the same order, every night. Within weeks, the routine itself starts making your baby sleepy.
Checking on baby without undoing your work
Every parent checks โ that's love, not worry. The trick is checking without creaking floors and opening doors that can wake a lightly sleeping baby. Some families crack the door and peek; others use a baby monitor so a glance at the phone answers the question. Whatever your method, the goal is the same: reassurance for you, undisturbed sleep for them.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use a fan or air conditioner for my baby?
Either works. Keep the room comfortably cool, and never point strong airflow directly at the baby. Gentle air circulation is the goal.
What should my baby wear to sleep in hot weather?
One layer of light cotton is usually enough โ a short-sleeved bodysuit or light pajamas. Check the back of the neck: sweaty means remove a layer.
Is it safe for my baby to sleep under a mosquito net?
Yes โ when the net is taut, secured, and out of baby's reach. Never drape a net loosely over or into the crib.
When will my baby sleep through the night?
Every baby is different. Many begin sleeping longer stretches around 4โ6 months, but waking at night remains normal well into the first year. Consistent routines help; comparing to other babies doesn't.
